Ford fined in wedding spending case

State Sen. John Ford, D-Memphis, was fined $10,000 today by the state Registry of Election Finance, which found that the senator fraudulently spent campaign money on his daughter's wedding.

The vote to fine him was 4-3.

Voting to impose the fine were board members Karen Dunavant of Memphis, George Harding of Lebanon, Lee Anne Murray of Nashville and Marian Ott of Nashville.

Voting against the fine were Chairwoman Darlene McNeece of Loudon and board members William F. Long Jr. of Nashville and John McClarty of Chattanooga. McClarty said a more thorough investigation and hearing would be required to impose penalties on Ford.

''Some of the board members seemed to have their mind made up before today,'' said Ford attorney Ed Yarbrough.

Ford did not attend the proceedings.

Yarbrough did not dispute that the money was spent on Ford's daughter's wedding, but he said it's common for elected officials to spend money on celebratory events that constituents attend. He also said that the $15,000 spent on the wedding reception last year at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis was only a sixth of the cost of the event. Out of 350 guests, 100 were constituents, Yarbrough said.

''I'm very pleased and actually surprised by the action today,'' said Barry Schmittou of Clarksville, the resident who filed a complaint with the registry. ''I believe many of the board members are patriotic heroes.''
