OT ... BWAC, re "Or use something simple. Buybacks (if in place) determine the expense. "

Let's see now. Companies that buyback shares have an option expense ... and companies that don't buyback shares don't have an expense.

Wow, you've clearly thought that solution through. ;-)

I think this whole options fight is an egotrip. Cisco should just start giving away restricted stock that vests. For goodness sake, that provides the same incentive or even more because it's real money. This whole options game Cisco is playing is just an egotrip of the executives in that they just can't stand to lose. Although I like that they have this never lose attitude, which is what makes Cisco great, they should stop spending so much money on trying to get away with something on options and switch to other means of vesting compensation that accomplishes the same goal of providing incentives for employees.

BWAC, I have mixed feelings regarding options. Behavior theory reflects that when employees have ownership and are rewarded for their performance they work harder. Otherwise, startup companies would never be able to make it paying the going rate. Now, with outsourcing and insourcing we have a new dimension with Worldwide competition where engineers from India and China are willing to work for a lower salary than here in the US. This only confuses the problem, IMO.
