AMAT Applied Materials -- Susquehanna previews qtr; sees generally in line results, but expect disappointing guidance (15.91 +0.16)

Applied Materials will report F2Q05 April results on Tuesday, May 17 after the close. While firm believes that results for the qtr will be in line with general expectations, Susquehanna remains concerned that co's outlook will prove disappointing to investors seeking signs of a fundamental inflection point. Firm believes that AMAT mgmt will forecast an additional decline in orders this qtr (firm's prediction is for order guidance of flat to down 10%), which would be below consensus expectations for order guidance (firm believes general expectations are for a sequential increase in orders). Furthermore, believes co had to stretch to meet its F2Q05 guidance, particularly on orders. While co's income statement will likely hold up due to its backlog and deferred revenue base, Susquehanna believes that a lackluster outlook from AMAT will create doubt as to the timing of a cyclical recovery in the semiconductor equipment industry.
