The Nokia's fine -- if any carrier thinks it's to their advantage to carry it.

Remember, the carriers are waiting in line to suck down your music money - they want in on that poorly perceived windfall.

802.11 is free - the carrier gets nary a penny for any song loaded onto the Nokia over 802.11 - so why should they adopt the Nokia for their networks? If the carriers don't adopt the 802.11-capable phone into their networks, it will die on the vine.

The Nokia N91 is a niche handset....even if gets subsidized, it will still cost well over $500. The rest of the handset manufacturers havent yet revealed their miniHD based handsets but I would expect similarly priced handsets for this Christmas. People who spend $700 on a handset are usually going to be gadget freaks who probably have an iPod already. Perhaps Christmas '06 will see some miniHD based handsets that are more reasonably priced.

OTOH, the flash based MP3 handsets are going to be available on just about every mid-tier handset this Christmas....and they will be heavily subsidized just like every other handset. Take a look at the current offerings from Carphone Warehouse (large handset retailer in the UK). They have 24 MP3 enabled handsets available and every one is free if you get the right postpaid plan.

The carriers have been subsidizing cameras in the handsets with no particular evidence that people are actually sending photos....I doubt that this will change for MP3 players.
