Re Lamarck & Darwin: What is amazing about these guys is they made their observations sans any knowledge of the actual mechanics (DNA). I.e. Lamarck's view could have been correct if the underlying mechanics were compatible which it was not. They made system level observations. Today, with all of our understanding of the underlying mechanics, you still meet people who can't grasp the system level behaviour. Reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes quote about a drop of water. An intelligent man seeing a single drop of water can infer both a Niagara Falls & the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, some who stare at the falls or ocean, refuse to believe their eyes.
