I agree Alan,

re: ""Do you think this does not happen in the United States?""

There are countless examples of pictures, news stories, etc. of Americans rescuing deer, moose, small animals, birds.. This is done by individuals all the time throughout the country. People bring animals to rescue centers, take care of them individually.. And MOST do not MAKE, (probably 99% )the media. And I don't think we, as a society, ever RAN RAGGED poor little foxes by dogs on a national scale.. Maybe some depraved people here did. But I don't know of them.

People just do things like that.. As WAY of life.. I have done it, I'm sure you have, picking up injured birds on the highway, etc. Taking them in.. NUrsing them.. Trying to stop the exploitation of wild creatures by just doing things.. For example, I think I made a difference with little wild lizards, people were capturing out in the desert and shipping back east to be imprisioned in aquariums if they made it. I wrote about it on SI before during a similar discussion.

So nobody, no society, MAYBE COLLECTIVELY, has the upper hand when it comes to saving and doing things for the wild. But mostly it is an INDIVIDUAL effort.. Actually, I think individual Americans with an ENVIRONMENTAL conscience have done ONE helluva a lot MORE than a LOT of others, I know of..

For example, I don't think some "developed" eastern European countries have done that much. I think the former Soviet Republic collapsed because of their environmental policies. They tried to mask their failures by COMPLETE exploitation of their environment, it was just TOO heavy of a burden to carry by Planet Earth, even in one area.

Just a few of my thoughts.. I have a lot more to say on this subject, but I will defer for now.

c

I have not read any stories about pregnant deer being rescued by police and taken to an animal sanctuary in the United States. Perhaps they only get local coverage--these were picked up by the BBC and widely disseminated. It would be very nice to think that Americans everywhere are on the lookout for deer in trouble, though.
