You know, normally I am of the opinion that if you reach out diplomatically to people, then miracles are possible. But with that part of the world, where the gun substitutes for the rule of law, you have to play by a different game. That is why I think intervention was necessary. I think once you show them that you can not attack the U.S. with impunity, then you get respect. After that, then you can reach out from a position of strength. I don't think this policy would work with more advanced societies, but I think it does work in the Middle East.

Hopefully, we can continue to build on our successful intervention there, but it is clearly not going to be a fast process. The insurgents are determined to derail the process at all costs. But the noose is tightening everywhere. We've already nabbed many top aides to Zwahiri, Bin Laden, and Zarqawi. They will all be caught eventually. I'd much rather be on the offensive like we are now and take military losses, then be on the defensive within our homeland and take civilian losses. At least now, we can say we have a fighting chance.
