"if the Shi-ites may have become nothing much than a field of cows waiting to be led to the slaughter."

I wouldn't put any serious money on that one. It is much more likely that they have learned the value of patience. They have something they've only dreamed about nearly in their grasp. The potential problem is that they probably have very long memories. When they have full control, the way the Sunnis behaved in the past and the present might come back to haunt them. While that would be their just desserts, it doesn't help the stability problem at all...

re "The Iraqis are not fighting for their freedom."

More and more they are. More Iraqis are ratting out the terrorists. Their security forces patrol and police ever larger areas of Iraq. They provided much of the security for the elections. In general there army, police, and security forces have become larger and more effective. When in the past they would just melt away at any opposition, now they are taking the fight too the enemy more and more often. They still rely on Americans for support and they aren't ready to go it alone yet but they are much closer then they where a year or two ago.

Yes, that has me befuddled as well. If I were a Shiite leader, I would have already ordered a retaliation against the Sunnis. I mean enough is enough already. How many cheeks does a Shiite have anyway? Last I checked it was two, yet they've forgiven and forgotten far more times than that.
