In the early stages of a people's fight for freedom, I don't think you'll ever see a rising standard of living. That is insane to expect. Think about the U.S. In our war of independence from Britain, American quality of living plummeted, until we had kicked them out.

Iraqis are experiencing the same thing. They are in a war of independence from the narrowminded Muslim extremists who are flooding their country and killing Iraqis with impunity. It's tough, but they face a clear choice. Continue fighting and win with the help of the U.S. or give up the fight and live forever in tyranny.

The fact that they voted in masses despite the threat of death from the insurgents is a powerful testament to where their inclination lies.
