Arabic and hebrew are both considered to be in the semitic family of languages, and quite related, there are some examples here - en.wikipedia.org Another is salaam, which means 'peace' and is used as a greeting, translates into hebrew as 'shalom' ... there are many more, and a lot of the structure of both languages is similar, so they wouldn't ever be as far apart as, say, english and chinese, or maybe even english and german ... probably the recent contact between the new hebrew and the arabic has developed mutually understandable terms, that's just a guess but the same thing has happened elsewhere, the english absorbing the norman tongue for instance, that didn't take very long, and they started out enemies in the same way, invaders dispossessing indigenous .... they didn't have mutually hostile religions though, hmmm, there is that. There was more on language relations upthread, try a thread search for 'canaanite languages', i posted a bunch of pages in the course of a dispute as to whether there was considered to be any such thing [there is, fwiw, hebrew and phoenician are two of them]
