Japan falling in global chip rankings

TOKYO — Japanese chip makers' global market share is declining, according to a Japanese industry analyst.

Yoshihisa Toyosaki, president of iSuppli Japan K.K., told a conference held this week (May 11) that most Japanese IC makers dropped in its list of the top 30 companies ranked by 2004 shipment revenues. Renesas Technology dropped from third to fifth place in iSuppli's rankings, Toshiba slipped from fifth to seven but NEC Electronics retain eighth place.

Global revenues grew by 24 percent last year, but the Japanese industry's overall growth was only 12 percent.

Moreover, Japanese chip makers are largely dependent on domestic sales, and are competing among themselves for market share. Hence, Toyosaki said they should refocus on overseas markets.

Japanese chip makers are heavily dependent on the captive market here dominated by Matsushita and Sony.

I think it is a cultural thing with respect to education. Many Americans don't seem to care much about education. High school graduation rates in California are about 70%, less than 50% in the Chicago public school system. Those are pretty disturbing statistics and do not bode well regardless of what the government does.
