Risky sex fad spreads among U.K. youth

WASHINGTON -- British teenagers are engaging in a new form of group sex that puts them at higher risk for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, delegates to the annual conference of the Royal College of Nursing were told Thursday.

According to reports in the online editions of the Guardian and a number of other British newspapers, the practice is called... "daisy chaining".... and involves older teenagers going to each others' homes to engage in sex with multiple partners.

"Colleagues are coming across reports of groups of young people having sex in large groups," Judy McRae, sexual health nurse in London said in reporting on the new fad, the Guardian reported.

The teens engaging in this practice are often unaware of the dangers involved. Conference delegates were told about the case of one 14-year-old boy who had contracted AIDS. At first, the boy refused to believe he had the disease, saying "[AIDS] only happens to older people."

The "daisy chain" fad is a part of a teenage culture in which children are pressured to become sexually active at an increasing early age, conference delegates were told.

Television dramas and magazines have played an important role in creating this culture, according to Kathy French, a sexual advisers working with teens.

"If you look at the soaps or in magazines, everyone is having sex," she said.

Providing sexual advice to teenagers has become an important role of school nurses in the U.K. About 90 percent of school nurses in the country provide sexual support and advice to students in the schools where they work, according to the Royal College of Nurses.
