When it became obvious that these suicide bombers were a trend, I was reminded of the Japanese kamakazis of WW II, and then of the Buddist monks that torched themselves in the Vietnam era. This isn't a new idea, it's just much uglier in that innocent civilians are killed. Perhaps that's why some have trouble admitting that these people are acting out of belief.
