The people I know who light up are all happy successful people. I don't know anyone who is even working class anymore, so I don't know anyone who is doing anything with pot aside from augmenting an already cool and happy life. My social circle in 3d includes only highly educated successful people- all working, all married, all with kids, all with kids in good colleges (where the kids are college age). I'm sure there are people who use pot, who are going nowhere, just as there are lots of alcoholics and alcohol drinkers in that position, but I would not ban alcohol (even though it seems to unleash violence in people) any more than I would ban pot. I think having pot illegal causes many more problems that decriminalization would cause, because we have a problem analogous to prohibition on our hands. Pot has been criminal for quite a while, and it seems to me it is getting more and more popular, rather than going away. Unless we enjoy the "benefits" of making criminals of huge swaths of the American people, it would be better if we just made it legal. And for people worried about gateway drugs, alcohol is probably the most dangerous, and it is legal :-( I think its inhibition lowering properties are much greater than pot- so those of you with kids, hammer away at the alcohol issues, because your child is much more likely to be harmed by alcohol. I don't think I've ever heard of a date rape facilitated by pot smoking (for example) but god knows how many girls pass out from alcohol, and wake up having had unprotected sex they did not consent to. focusonyourchild.com
