I guess my point is, do we want the govt to protect the stupid from themselves?

Well, that is a very good question, and could be applied on a lot of different levels. Some of which might be:

1) VC's playing with startups.
2) Individual investors chasing whatever with non-retirement money.
3) Farmers over planting a given crop.
4) Individuals playing with retirement funds (both current IRA's and any possible SS reform instruments)
5) Companies underfunding retirements (think UAL here for the most recent)
6) Hedge funds playing with rich guys money (what was that one called, International Finance or something like that, the ones the feds bailed out a few years back).
7) Government spending and longterm debt.

The "American Way" is predicated on 1 & 2, so I doubt anyone will try to hard to change those. What about the others. 3 is a well know welfare case for example.

I have noticed in the USA, we are strongly in favor of individualism in the pursuit of profits, but we do somewhat socialize risks.
