I thought I'd been clinically depressed (as opposed to just depressed, but not incapacitatingly) twice in my life, and I think i was, both times in the wake of life-crises, but this is apparently an awful variant I'm lucky enough never to have experienced.

It made me feel very bad for him. I just wrote him but failed to ask if he's on meds. I would assume he is.

He's an interesting person. At one time, he was a member of Opus Dei.
