Re: Whatever the correct number is they are still a minority. My point was that for a minority, they are exerting influence way beyond their numbers.

Do you agree or disagree?

I agree. The (ideological) sphere of influence of Evangelicals is wide, if only because religion --that is, the Judeo-Protestant mythology-- is so powerful in molding and shaping American minds.... Here's a NRO article about "The Right Nation", a book by two British authors that I read several months ago:

nationalreview.com

It rightly highlights the fact that, overall, the US is a much more conservative and religious/puritan society than Europe. Another difference between Europe and the US is the way people express their bigotry, racism and other reactionary feelings.... As I once put it, in the US, far-right shibboleths make up a lifestyle, a way of life, not a mere private, somewhat repressed set of beliefs. I guess that's why a murderous crank like fugitive Eric Rudolph got enough help from like-minded people to escape the FBI for so long.... In Europe, we also have (Catholic) fundamentalists who strongly oppose abortion, yet I've never heard about a terrorist bombing of an "abortion clinic" in Europe... The same freaks are also strong opponents of euthanasia: a couple of years ago there was a very emotional case that made the headlines in France and beyond(*).

Somehow, the Vincent Humbert case was the French prequel to your Mary Schiavo affair... Well, the difference was that, in France, the police didn't have to arrest a "pro-life" fanatic who offered $250,000 for the murder of the persons responsible of Humbert's (voluntary) death....(**)

We also have people who feel strongly against same-sex marriages and who regularly demonstrate in the streets(§). It happened in 1998 when then-PM Lionel Jospin devised the so-called PACS, a kind of pseudo-partnership contract open to just about any two mates (including brothers and sisters living together).... Well, again, the (behavorial) difference between the US and Europe is that you'll never see anti-gay freaks harassing and shouting slogans like "Turn to Jesus!" to gay and lesbian couples going in and out of city hall... Even when former anchorman-turned-pol Noel Mamère announced --several MONTHS beforehand-- that he intended to celebrate the first plain vanilla wedding for a gay couple in France, only sympathizers and journalists crowded the precincts --no anti-gay demonstrators were reported....(***)

Likewise, we do have many people who feel just exasperated and mad about immigration, whether legal or illegal. However, they'll never form gun-toting, trigger-happy, vigilante and militia outfits to patrol the borders --like the Minutemen in the US Sun Belt... European rightwing freaks are crazy, to be sure, but then, they ain't THAT crazy!

(*) Overdose kills right-to-die man

A severely disabled Frenchman has died two days after his mother put an overdose in his drip.

The case of 22-year-old Vincent Humbert who was left mute, blind and paralysed following an accident three years ago has sparked a nation-wide debate over euthanasia in France.

His mother, Marie Humbert, 47, was briefly arrested on Wednesday after injecting him with barbiturates in the northern town of Berck-sur-Mer.

She has now been released into psychiatric care.

Euthanasia is illegal in France and prosecutors are considering whether to charge Mrs Humbert with murder or manslaughter.

(***)French mayor to hold gay wedding

Mr Mamere had offered to marry gay couples earlier this month
A French politician has said he will conduct his country's first same-sex wedding in June.

Noel Mamere, mayor of Begles near Bordeaux in south-west France and a parliamentary deputy for the Green Party, said he would marry the men.

He said there was nothing in French law to prevent it, and that it was unacceptable that gays did not have the same rights as other French citizens.
