Newmont Mining Profit Falls, Shares Down
Wednesday April 27, 3:55 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM - News), the world's largest gold producer, posted an unexpected decline in first-quarter profit on Wednesday due to rising operating costs and lower sales.

Newmont's shares were down $2.82, or 7 percent, at $37.43 in mid-afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company, which warned in January that sales of precious metals would decline this year, said rising raw material and fuel prices drove up operating costs in the quarter.
