I do understand the distinction you make and it is worthy of note. But the practical reality is that the distinction is such a fine line as to have no real meaning.

The difference between taking risks for a cause and killing yourself for a cause isn't just a fine line.

Even the difference between a known almost 100% chance of death by enemy action and directly killing yourself is important, but the first wave on D-Day didn't have near 100% KIA, and the KIA percentage at the worst beaches was as high as it was partially because of unforeseen factors. If you know your going to die it might be considered a suicide mission, but that wasn't the case on D-Day.
