That was 1250 something. ~800 years later here we are trying to put the Shiites in power?

All we did is start a Civil War in Iraq. This will go on long after our adventure is over.


Well, when you understand that the primary reason for the split between the Shia and the Sunnis was that they disagreed over the succession of the Caliphates whose reign ended a couple of hundred years later, and when you realize that since then, the Shia have felt that the Sunnis do not follow the ultra conservative Sharia close enough with the notable and obnoxious exception of the Wahhabi Sunnis, then and only then do you get a sense of who these people are. Think in terms of American evangelicals. This is who is taking over in Iraq. It might put into perspective the intensity at which the Sunnis are fighting against such a takeover.
