Rice, on surprise visit to Iraq, urges patience for new government

(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) May 15, 2005 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is urging weary Iraqis to be patient as their elected government takes over.

She is using a one-day trip to meet with US troops and diplomats, as well as Iraqi leaders in Baghdad and the northern Kurdish region.

Upon landing in Baghdad Sunday she thanked the troops for their efforts. Rice says their work is helping ensure "the Middle East will be whole, and free and democratic and at peace."

She's also meeting with officials from Iraq's newly formed government. Rice is using those talks to offer them support and ask how the US can be most useful.

Earlier, in the Kurdish region, she urged patience for the fragile new government and said Iraqis have made remarkable political progress.

The trip is Rice's first visit to Iraq as the nation's top diplomat.
