Yes, solar to electricity cracking water would be very nice and even more inefficient;

What I heard Lovins say is that he's in the electrolysis camp. Talks about hydrogen from windmills, rather than from natural gas feedstocks. I agree with this direction.

It's truly idiotic to convert natural gas to hydrogen to drive vehicles, since natural gas is perfectly suited to the task without the wasteful conversion. Of course, this is exactly what the evil George Bush has proposed, because wasting gas and oil are his goals.
