Re: No Draft, No Way - what do you think of this Ray?? Of course it is important that people are concerned and expressing resistance to the government's evil. Yesterday, I saw an interesting segment on Book TV tinyurl.com featuring Andrew Bacevich discussing his new book, "The New American Militarism" tinyurl.com Bacevich is a retired military officer who is very level headed. He see the American military as a great threat to American democracy. So do I. During the discussion with Bacevich and others at the Council on Foreign Relations, it was proposed that the military academies such as West Point, Annapolis and the troubled USAF Academy which has been much in the news should all be terminated, and the officer class of our future military be trained in ROTC units on civilian campuses. The idea is that the military elite are becoming entirely too ingrown, and entirely too separate from the citizens of the nation. I could not agree more. A few months ago, one of the instructors at West Point was a guest on C-SPAN's Washington Journal for about an hour. This young woman was purportedly a historian. However, I found that I was absolutely aghast at the right wing spin that she was spouting, apparently in all sincerity. Her worldview was ghastly, her one-sidedness in her understanding of world conflicts was grotesque and I came away with a great fear that she would be inculcating receptive young minds with the same fascist-militarist bile that infected her. If she's representative of what is being passed off as fact at West Point, we now have a young officer class of complete jackals and zombies who know only a right wing fiction as their understanding of history. We must end militarism if America is to survive. Reinstating the draft may actually be one of the best ways to do this. If the military remains terribly cloistered from American society, the military cannot help but see itself as superior to the people and in need of ruling over the People. And that is one sure way to destroy America.
