If the columns were knocked on on one side, it would be the equvalent of trying to keep a tall object sitting on a steep ramp from falling over. Technically what the situation that develops is an overturning moment from the weight of the building at its center of gravity and the upward supporting forces from the remaining columns. The resultant forces above and below and not colinear, so the forces act like a force couple system--an overturning moment. I'm a civil engineer with a background in structural engineering.
