To: SiouxPal who wrote (17510 ) 5/16/2005 4:39:00 PM From: Wharf Rat Respond to of 362425 I just recently learned what "peak oil" was within the last 2 months, and I'm a political wonkabe. Ibn a way, this doesn't surprise me. I know a lot of intelligent and informed folks who are just starting to wake up to it. Like my friend who called me up to tell me the town was starting planning; she is a just retired school teacher, well informed, very much an environmentalist, and just discovered it in the last 4 months or so. It is also pretty depressing that so few people are aware. I started seeing articles pop up about 9 months ago on 321gold, so I've been keeping an eye on it, and posting some of the articles. I'm lucky; I first heard about it during the '72 McGovern campaign, so it's always been sitting there in the back of my mind. The 2 crisis in the 70's had me thinking that, "This isn't the real deal; they are tweaking with us, but next time might be for real." Next time is now. I'm pretty sure this is the real deal, and barring a short price-shock recession which might drop prices again, petroleum is basically as low as it is going to go. I don't know when we will get there, but I've got a feeling it is close. Some in the know are saying this Thanksgiving. There are stories out that Saudi Arabia's biggest may be past the peak, last week Chavez said production from Venezuela's largest field was down for some reason; he's thinking possible sabotage, but The Kid is thinking, "Hmmm." Last week also, OPEC said "pump full tilt boogie", so what we are getting now is as much as we can produce. Let's see how long we can keep it up. What I am mostly is depressed, because there is this great wreck coming, and so few seem to understand it, or to prepare against it. From the stuff I've been reading, we have maybe 5 years to get it together. Sometimes I am sanguine; "This town of mine, we are cool and people know and we can get energy independent in 5 years." Then I start looking at all the buildings, and not one has renewable sources. All the folks who have their own systems are living in the hills, off the grid. Even tho people are becoming aware and starting to act, we have so far to go. I'm starting to think this this is the biggest problem we face, more-so than climate change, although they are inter-related. Iraq, which I'm not trying to minimize, isn't as important. SS and the budget, which Shrub IS trying to minimize, isn't as important. And the stuff the news covers...Jacko, Peterson, Blake, Martha, runaway brides, is all just crap they are throwing at us to avoid looking at the real world. I'm no better. Before I drove thru town looking at the lack of solar panels, I stopped and look at my naked roof. But, I'm thru postponing; I'm gonna stop by a solar place after work and start talking(actually, I called Fri; the lady has an appointment with our health clinic today :-), and I told her to head up the road and talk with the HS principal.) Anyway, I am going to start today; I've got to get paperwork going by 6/30; otherwise the rebate drops from $2.80 a watt to $2.60. Me
