High-placed anonymous sources are EXACTLY how the press works in this country. I am surprised that you do not know that.

Yes, it is the senior U.S. government official and the Pentagon who should be held responsible, unless I have some fundamental misunderstanding of the facts, and please correct me if I do, since I will happily admit that I am wrong if that is the case.

Journalists are required by their ethics (I know, you are ROFL) to protect anonymous sources. They actually fairly regularly go to jail instead of revealing them. So Newsweek cannot divulge the name of the senior U.S. official who gave them this story. Of course I am very curious to know who it is, and perhaps a blogger or someone will figure it out. I am sure a lot of people are trying to solve this puzzle right now!
