It looks more and more to me that Newsweek was forced to take the hit for the story without doing much, if anything, wrong. That same story about Quoran flushing has appeared in other places, without the same reaction. They verified the story with the Pentagon by giving them the entire story to read before they printed it. The senior U.S. government official (I would sure like to know who that was) was someone who had given them reliable information before. I realize I'm being repetitious here, but most of the people who are upset about this seem to be blaming Newsweek without understanding the way journalism works or being specific about just why Newsweek is being blamed, and not the senior government official or the Pentagon, both of whom I find considerably more culpable than Newsweek.
