If pentagon requested me not too, I would hold the story as an editor. As a citizen, I would never want it published. Media obliges many times the request of pentagon and administration.

Now if you are drudge report, then it is something else.

Reporters back then wouldn't have. Today they would. Example: Coverage of US marines coming ashore in Somalia.
