No, the senior Pentagon official's statement to Newsweek was much more specific than what you are saying. He acknowledged that the story was in particular internal investigative report, if I understand the story correctly.

Then he realized he wasn't sure it was in that investigation that he saw it (not that he hadn't heard of such an incident).

The Pentagon and Centcom reviewed every line of this story before it went to print, and either agency could have killed the story. That is why Newsweek had them read it, to fact check it.
