we may never know if this story was relayed to several mags and newspapers and they judged it unfit to print except newsweek.... If this person had a hidden agenda to throw some dirt on the pentagon i think it is fair to believe he/she was shopping the rumor.

Perhaps only newsweek misjudged the impact of this rumor.

They are the ones who printed the lie. They claim to "fact check" all of this stuff. No need to be cautious in nailing them.

No, no need to be cautious in nailing them for printing the "lie." But, then, that's not what I suggested being cautious about nailing them for.
