They just didn't run with this one. That's too easy. The main thrust of the outrage has been that this particular bit was so uniquely incendiary that Newsweek is responsible for murder because they should have recognized what it would provoke. No, you can't get away with "they just didn't run with this one" because "this one" wasn't supposed to be just another Gitmo rumor. You can't have it both ways. Either this was just another Gitmo rumor and Newsweek is no more culpable than any other MSM is for ordinary Gitmo rumors and ordinary Bush bashing. Or this was an egregious and reprehensible failure on their part, one that warrants all this outrage.
