Increased earnings (with flat cash flow) *or* increased cash flow (with flat earnings) each impact equity prices positively. So all I'm suggesting is that the direction of equity prices due to increased earnings *and decreased* cash flow is not a foregone conclusion.

If reported earnings weren't important too ... why have company managements been fighting so hard against expensing options? It doesn't impact cash flow at all.
