"This whole Iraq thing had better pay off big time over the next few decades."

Yes, that's much to be desired.

I believe we are already seeing many beneficial side-effects through out the region as various totalitarian regimes feel the pressure, and as repressed populations push for more freedoms.

Still... it could turn out to be a close thing.

IMO, Iraq is likely to (if it hasn't already) move into a full scale civil war between the Shia and the Sunni (especially since the insurgent Sunnis seem to have 'all the cash in the world' available to them for arms purposes... according to reports from our military, who say that no matter how many supplies and arms we capture, the insurgents immediately get re-armed.

Apparently huge sums of cash are being supplied from Sunnis in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, etc., etc.

Also --- while the American tax payers are firmly on the hook for 1/2 Trillion dollars in war costs --- I doubt that they would stand by quietly for a second half Trillion.

At some point the taxpayers will say 'we've paid enough'(especially since it's all 'on the credit card' for their children to pay)....
