The infections are before the host dies, so spread can be greater if host is walking around longer and going to work, school, etc to infect others.

Milder version spreads virus more efficiently and more recombination possible with more infected hosts, which is why asymptomatic ducks and chickens (and now swine) are such a problem.

Numbers out of Vietnam are unreliable, but case fatality rate seems to be about 20% in the north and 100% in the south.
