Karzai won an national election which no one has described as unfair. But then he is friendly to the US so apparently people on the left have to trash him as a "U.S. puppet ". You mention assassination attempts on Karzai. So what? If you think assassination attempts are signs of illegitimacy, perhaps you consider Lincoln and Kennedy in some way illegitimate? All US Presidents have been surrounded by security forces to protect them for a very long time.
