OTOH, when the Gulf Stream collapses and Great Britain and Scandanavia fall into a new Ice Age, there will be plenty of empty seats and cheap fares on one way tickets to the icebox.

This scenario is definitely not science fiction. It's happened in the past. The question is how rapidly it can happen today. Recent science indicates that this 2003 production is not at all out of the realm of what is possible.

Getting over that hump is no great relief though.

And, of course, all bets are off in the event of geopolitical disruption. The current none-too-bright US administration is known for total lack of diplomatic skills. Their actions so far have shown their bias toward violence in dealing with oil. Their inactions so far show that they have little interest in evolving away from oil. So I'd say the odds slightly favor disruption.
