As much as I admire and respect our teachers, I would not say they are significantly smarter than their larger district counterparts. They came and took the job, and mostly stuck around. It is an environment that is easy to fall in love with.

You are correct that with grades together one of the techniques teachers use to involve the class in common activities is for the higher grade to work with the lower grade. My kids generally get assigned to reading to and with the younger kids in their class. I am not sure how common reading at over three times their grade level is. The activity reinforces their self confidence and forces them to work to improve their ability to read out loud.

Teachers also assign similar but grade appropriate material to each grade. One huge advantage is that younger kids might work with the older ones in some subjects. Mine unfortunately cannot work with the rest of the kids to advance their math skills. They get sent to work independently on math in the computer lab after completing the in class assignments.

The staff is used to the unusual, and so react much more fluidly than teachers in bigger districts. In those districts, they are more likely to group kids by ability into different classes. In the small school, there is less opportunity to segregate high and low learners. Both are helped by working with each other.
