Well, Mary, I think that Professor Willard is not espousing advocacy. Rather he is merely asserting an intellectual right in the academy to consider religious faith along with other avenues toward knowledge.

True, he is a believer. But also true is his insistance that the life of the mind is not and should not be divorced from the life of the spirit.

And as a Christian, he is also fulfilling a requirement in his religious tradition that one not Deny the faith but fairly and squarely Affirm it in one's life and teaching.
