"But you have seen people here (Tench comes to mind) who don't mind at all forking out $$ to have the sons and daughters of others die for their "cause""

Which is why John advocates a draft. Reluctantly, I have to agree with him. But such a draft if instituted will have to have very limited deferments, if any.

Al, But you have seen people here (Tench comes to mind) who don't mind at all forking out $$ to have the sons and daughters of others die for their "cause"

"Forking out $$" to have sons and daughters of others die for their "cause" is a lot better than forcing them via draft.

Or do you not accept that everyone who is in the army is there out of his or her own choice?

P.S. - No need to point to failed recruitment goals. I understand the "nuance" between pulling out because no one wants to sign up, and pulling out because someone forced a family member to fight.

It's real easy to view a war from an aloof, intellectual perspective if you don't have "skin in the game". If it fits with their politics then they just avoid internalizing the horror of it.

War is the ultimate atrocity a nation can commit, so their better be a good fucking reason. And everyone should share the same opportunity to participate, just to keep the decision honest.

This war, we're just taking the most patriotic, and we're putting it on the federal credit card. No coffins on TV, no closeup's of people getting blown to bits. To the average citizen (Tench), it appears to cost nothing.
