7 - it's no coincidence--it comes from the bible. seven is the most frequent number found in the bible

It comes from an even earlier tradition.

As early as Sumerian math (perhaps as early as 1000 BCE) the mathmatics was performed in units of 360 degrees. They did not like to work with fractions, and 360 can be divided (without fractions) by:

1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10 (but not 7) That gave 7 a mystical power.
It was also avoided in a practical sense since it was more difficult to work with than other numbers.

"there are seven continents"

That has changed over the centuries and will continue to change.

How many toes do you have? NOT seven.

How many ears do you have? NOT seven.

How many blades of grass on your lawn? NOT seven.

How many planets are there? NOT seven.

How many sides on a die? NOT seven.

How many books in the bible? NOT seven

How many letters in "Cyprian"? HEY! WOW!
