He went there to symbolically say "This is Jewish ground, and always will be, at least if I have anything to say about it". And that message resonated very well with many Jews to Sharon's benefit in the election

Well it is only the most sacred Jewish site. How many times do we hear that it is the third-most sacred Islamic site, but never that it is a Jewish site? And the PA completely denies that it is a Jewish site, denies that there was ever a Temple. The Waqf, whom the Israelis left in charge, dug an underground mosque in the mount, destroying priceless archaeological information. Archaeologists are picking First Temple period artifacts out of the rubbish pile. Barak should have thrown them in jail but he was too big a wuss.

Again, the attitude seems to be that we got to be super-extra sensitive to Muslims, but take every insult they dish out lying down.

Nobody can afford to brush off the dangers to Israel, esp. considering the kind of leadership some Arabs states have. Israel needs to keep its deterrence sharp, and hope nobody crazy gets his hands on nuclear missiles.
