May 19, 2005 - City's unemployment rate climbs
by Tom Fredrickson

New York City's unemployment rate climbed to 5.7% in April from 5.2% in March as the number of job-seeking city residents increased at a faster rate than the number of jobs being created.

The labor force--which consists of employed residents plus people actively seeking work--increased by 34,700, seasonally adjusted, says the state Department of Labor. The number of employed city residents increased by 16,100. The unemployment rate represents the number of people looking for work as a percentage of the total labor pool. Total job numbers will be released later this week by the city comptroller's office, which adjusts Labor Department data.

"You never like to see the unemployment rate rising, but over the last year, the unemployment rate has gotten much lower and a higher number of city residents are employed," says James Brown, an economist with the Labor Department.
