Antarctica scientists get big ice cube delivery

The last thing Australian scientists in Antarctica need is a lifetime supply of ice cubes.

But an iceberg more than twice the size of Malta has ground to a halt near an Australian outpost on the frozen continent, blotting out much of the horizon.

The 50 km-long (31 mile) iceberg is part of a bigger iceberg that broke apart from the Ross Ice Shelf more than five years ago, the Australian Antarctic Division said.

The iceberg, big enough to make 15 thousand million ice cubes, has drifted more than a thousand km (620 miles) in recent months to Australia's remote Casey Station, a 16-building encampment opened in 1959 to conduct research.

Station leader Jeremy Smith said the iceberg was clearly visible as a long ice cliff stretching across the horizon.

"But often it is sulking in shadow and difficult to distinguish from the sky in the background," he said in a statement.

In time it is expected to continue its westward drift around the continent, Smith said.

There was no known impact on wildlife in the area, he said.

After evaluating multiple renewable energy alternatives, Cypress Semiconductor decided to incorporate solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to reduce their operating costs and take a leadership role in promoting renewable technology. Cypress chose a commercial-scale solar electric generating system that was designed, manufactured and installed by PowerLight Corporation.

In July 2002, PowerLight completed the installation of a 325kW solar electric generation system at Cypress? new headquarters in San Jose, California. By using PowerLight's solar electric modular rooftop system, the onsite electricity generated by an unused asset the roof space became a significant component in reducing operating costs, generating clean,reliable electricity, and reducing building energy load and peak demand costs.The solar roof panels also reduce heating and air conditioning costs due to theirinsulation and thermal reflection value, as well as protect the roof for 30 years from thermal cycling and UV degradation. And finally, the modular design of PowerGuard technology enabled the system to be tailored exactly to Cypress' buildings' specific application requirements.
