It's not just the Koreans who are passing us up in stem cell research (and biotech in general), but the Chinese and English and Swedes and in fact a good portion of the developed world. This is an absolutely huge potential that America, while having a headstart, is slipping badly. I disagree completely that we are "science phobic" - but you are right about grip that the "faith based" conservatives has on W. As goes GM will go the biotech industry because we failed to be think progressively. Like stem cell research isn't going to happen if we don't do it? Huh!
