Vote inquiry in Galloway's seat

Mr Galloway beat Labour's Oona King in a tight contest
Election officials in MP George Galloway's constituency are investigating 250 complaints from people who were unable to vote.

Mr Galloway beat Labour in Bethnal Green and Bow by 823 just votes but has complained about the electoral roll.

A spokesman for Tower Hamlets Council said it was examining reports from people who found they were not on the register on polling day.

There has so far been no legal challenge to the election result.

On election night the newly elected Respect MP attacked the council for publishing an electoral roll "so shot through with errors and anomalies... as to be almost meaningless".

The council stressed the complaints came in a constituency which had 83,000 eligible voters.

A spokesman said the council sympathised with anyone entitled to vote who had found their name was not on the voting register.

Officials were following up all reports of alleged errors and omissions.

"We would normally do this after an election, since many people do not check that they are on the register before polling day itself, despite our publicity campaigns to encourage them to do so," said a council spokesman.

He added: "There could be a number of reasons for these omissions apart from canvassing or clerical errors on the part of the council, including people failing to register before the election and electoral registration forms incorrectly completed."

Some of the complaints come from Walnut House, a council block in Bow. The council says it did not canvas the building for electoral registration.
