Bio-fuels are good, but it will be hard to scale them up to make a significant dent in fuel consumption. Problem is that they require a lot of land, water, fertilizer, transportation, and processing. We are hearing a lot about Brazil exporting ethanol, but the underlying fact is that Brazil is still importing petroleum and faces the depletion of it's own petroleum reserves.

Bio-fuels will become more economical as we develop better production methods and more efficient vehicles. But it's doubtful they can replace the mass quantities of cheap petroleum fuel we consume today. Something has to give, and I think it's going to be people's lifestyle expectations.
