They are increasing their debt faster than their incomes only because they are taking on higher total mortgage debt, their debt service as percentage otoh remains within historical norms. The 300 billion they drew out in equity from their houses is easily dwarfed by the 500 billion they put back into additions and improvements in the last five years.
