Weird dress and behavior is often a reaction to corporate marketing, rather than a herd thing. It is the anti-herd instinct. There are subcultures that are marketed to too (though less extensively, because the market forces behind marketing to small segments are not as strong), but a lot of weird dress and behavior is a reaction to the gap/banana republic/hot topic/delia's herd. I disagree with you that it's all part of the game. Some young people are playing their own games.
