I did no such thing.

Finally, $50k for a family of four in a metro area is a very tight income.

Depends on the metro area.

For a single person, its okay but not great. And the truth is, its below the average median for the US. So its just above poverty.

1 - $ 9,570
2 - $12,830
3 - $16,090
4 - $19,350

It would have to be a family of 14 for $50k to be under the poverty line.

For the Census Bureau's Poverty threashold numbers see
census.gov
the numbers are not very different from the HHS numbers.

You might consider those figures to be two low but even if you double them, $50k would still be well above the poverty level for a family of 4 let alone for an individual.
