Well, the cartoon is very funny, Jeff. I hope you don't think environmentalists have no sense of humor.

I have no problem personally with people having SUVs if they have a lifestyle or personal circumstances where no other car would work as well. It makes me really angry to see huge gas guzzling cars, trucks and SUVs being driven by one person driving to work every day in places where there are other commuting options available, because generally I think that is wasteful.

But for someone who lives in an area with really bad weather, who uses the 4WD feature to go off road frequently, and has several big dogs who don't fit well in a car but need daily exercise, certainly there are SUVs that have reasonable fuel economy, and that might be the best choice in that situation. So I don't think it's good to make blanket condemnations of SUVs, personally.
